So, you binged on sugar. Now what?
Well, you might have a bit of a headache, feel nauseated, be experiencing an upset stomach, or even feeling a bit anxious.
But don’t worry - there is something you can do! So, let’s put the guilt and shame aside. What’s the next step?
Step 1: Get MovingDon’t overdo this. And don’t use this as a means to compensate for all the calories you just consumed. Instead, move a bit to help your body re-regulate your blood sugar levels. When you consume sugar (especially a lot of sugar), your blood sugar levels spike. Exercise is a great way to improve insulin sensitivity and help your body regulate blood sugar levels now, and later. Additionally, when you encourage your muscles to contract, the cells will inevitably take in glucose to produce energy to do so, helping to effectively lower your blood sugar levels. So, get moving. Do a quick 20-30 minute power walk or a 15-minute yoga flow. Get those muscles contracting and those joints moving. This forces your body to use more energy and use up that excess blood sugar.
Step 2: Eat a Meal or Snack Full of Protein and Healthy Fats
Avoid skipping a meal or punishing yourself for your binge. This doesn’t help you or your body. For your next meal, just be conscious about what you put on your plate and into your mouth. Focus on a protein and fat-heavy meal or snack. This can help, again, improve insulin resistance, as well as prevent another huge spike in blood sugar.
Step 3: Think AheadAlright, so what’s going to happen next time you have sugar cravings? What can you do now to prevent going overboard? First up, you can plan your meals and snacks ahead of time. Meal prepping is a wonderful way to ensure you stay on track with a healthy and balanced diet.
